IALC and JAOS join forces for Olympic scholarships

The International Association of Language Centres (IALC) has joined forces with Japanese agency association JAOS to provide a scholarship programme to help Japanese nationals prepare for the forthcoming Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games 2020 and the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

The two organisations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in which IALC member schools have pledged scholarships worth EU100,000.

The scholarships will be awarded by JAOS member agencies to Japanese students who would like to volunteer at the major sporting events. The successful scholarship recipients will receive four weeks' tuition and accommodation.

IALC President, Giorgia Biccelli, said, "The IALC and JAOS scholarship campaign is an innovative multi-layered initiative which will impact positively on the Japanese study abroad industry. IALC has found in JAOS an excellent partner. IALC schools have responded very generously to this call of action. For both our organisations, this first step opens up future opportunities which will be beneficial for all our members."

Robin Adams, IALC Vice-President of Marketing, added, "I am delighted to be part of this exciting campaign. Through the commitment of both JAOS and IALC member schools, we will be able to assist Japanese students in going beyond learning a language, and to explore unique experiences in preparation for their efforts volunteering at international sporting events in Japan."

IALC added that it thanked Yasuo Sone, JAOS President, and Tatsuhiko Hoshino, Executive Secretary, for their effort and support for the campaign.

During a presentation held prior to the StudyTravel Alphe Japan conference in December 2016, Tatsu Hoshino, Executive Secretary of JAOS, cited the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as a factor that would increase interest in foreign language study among young Japanese students.
